I had 6 chickens 3 died of of old age, I went to an auction and bought some more of which 3 were chicks. I kept them separate for a week , then together. I was horrified to find mites on the egg in the nest box. not just one lots , found them on me aswell, tried to get the vet to help. consultation fee plus treatment .. had to take them mites and all for them to weigh them. bearing in mind the cost of a chicken.. told vet not happy as they would be in the boxes , in my car then in her practice with other animals , they still insisted i took them so i made a very hard decision and got the boom..

Just as i was going to do the deed, i found a note.. my mite killer had arrived,, phew,, how long it takes to get rid i dont know (one chick already paid the toll for the vets money tactics).

I have sprayed them under the wings as suggested, closed the pen (they refused to go in after the chick died. how often i use it i dont know. Im burning the coop, new one on the way thats plastic.

Anyone know how to be rid of the darn mite please im in the UK ?

It's controversial but I use pour on Ivermectin.not sure it that's available meat you but it works tremendously well for my 13 birds. All are fine and I seen mites dead in their feathers within 6 hours of treatment. I notice then scratching less and also I do not have the occasional mite crawling on me after I pick them up and love them.

Welcome to BYC!
:yesss: We are glad you joined our flock!
What did you buy to spray the birds with?
What is the name of the product.
You can use neem oil in the coop for now.
I don't think you have permethrin over there but that is what I would recommend for treating both the birds and the coop.

well as a new member, i have had to deal with mites on and off for years. i will not put a chemical or pesticide on or near my chickens. but i will go medieval on the mites. first clean out the coop then heat every inch with a blow torch. do it again in 5 days and 10 days., coat the inside with lime dust. now the chickens need to be dusted with wood ash ,all over. do it everyday for 5 days. if its real bad torch the ground too. leave a big pan full of ash for them year around.

I had success with Prozap Garden & Poultry Dust and Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth treatments when I discovered a mite issue. I was treating the ground and coop every other day with the Diatoms and the Poultry dust was used twice. Anywhere the chickens were accessing received care because they not only take over a coop, but fall off chickens as they wander.

Please, please, please! be sure to report the incident to the auction place too.

I don't know what the rules are there, but here, you can't show or auction birds with any ailments. The auction place was negligent in this case and may be willing to replace the chick and help with the treatment of your remaining birds and coop. The seller will hopefully be suspended from auctioning birds until they sort out their mite problem; they're a risk to every other seller at the auction too.

Please do report them.
