Hi, my hens have lice, I've seem them crawling around on the hens they are long ish and are kind of red coloured but they aren't red mites. Can u recommend anything I can do to kill them all?
I'm getting a new coop soon so do u have any recommendations how to keep the mites from being in there.
Thanks

Tea tree oil probably shouldn’t be used to spray the chicken coop, since it can be toxic if eaten. I am not even sure that it would kill lice. Can you get permethrin in Ireland? I believe it is hard to get in the UK and Canada. That is very good to use for mites and lice. Sulfur powder used in gardens to combat fungus, and is effective against mites and lice. You can put some in a sock and dust the chicken, as well as use it in the coop. You could also call your vet and ask for a recommendation. Do you know how the lice were brought in? Lice eggs hatch every 10 days, so the chickens should be treated a couple of times to get the newly hatched ones.

I have to remember not to use it again. I only spryed it on the roosts, walls and nestboxes so should be OK. I saw permethrin powder on amazon but probably won't be able to ship here. I will ask the vet.
Thanks

Right or wrong, this is what I did
1,Mixed a permethrin dip using warm water and 5 gallon bucket. Dipped and held birds up to beak while massaging dip into all feathers. Let them stand in the dip for 2-3 minutes.
2, Removed all bedding/nesting material and sprayed the ENTIRE Coop/Run with permethrin. Wetting heavily.
3, sprinkled lime and DE heavily in all areas of coop/run after the spray had dried.

I did this early morning and kept birds locked out of coop until evening. This took care of infestation. Permethrin is labeled for dipping. I firmly believe my infestation came from buying 2 birds to add to my flock. This was 3 months ago and have had no re-infestation.
YMMV
