I use Permethrin. Dilute in water and use a hand pump sprayer. Hit all the birds as I take them out of coop then clean out coop and drench that with sprayer too. Have all doors open to dry then put in new nesting material and bedding.

I don't clean out the coop seven days later but do hit cracks and corners with sprayer after spraying birds for second time. I do this once a year every fall. And yes, I usually don't realize they need it until I see mites crawling on eggs.

I have had to deal with mites also. I dusted my chickens with Sevin. I also stripped the coop and dusted all the cracks, and nest boxes then put shavings in the coop and straw in the nest boxes. That seems to get rid of them.

I guess you can use Sevin but it is no longer available as poultry dust, for garden use. It is commonly used in the US on crops but is not approved for use on poultry or any other animals. I hav e used it in the past but now I use permethrin, no egg withdrawal period.
