Mites never go away. Living deep in woods

I'm in the UK with slightly different products available, but after a serious battle with mites I got them under control with permethrin as others have recommended. Our flock live in a very old wooden shed which is essentially a mite paradise, but it is comfortable and very spacious for the chickens generally. Permethrin has worked really well in our case. Good luck!

I used both permethrin spray and then sulphur dust (99.5%) to bring Northern Fowl mites under control. I started use of sulphur once the temperatures made use of sprays impossible.

I sprayed then dusted (not both at the same time) each of the birds thoroughly (vent, under wings, back and chest ON THE SKIN) multiple times on weekly basis. Also added sulpur to their dust baths and used a fine net bag attached over their pop door so that they brushed the bag on exit/entry.

You should try to determine which mites you have as it will impact how long you will need to be attentive to a re-occurrence and whether your treatments might build up a local resistance.

Good luck!.

I thought permethrin was not available in the UK?

It is not licensed for use on poultry in the UK but it is possible to find some suitable products such as spray for ornamental birds, which is what I have used. For the coop I found louse powder for horse stables with permethrin in or you can get ant powder, but actually I noticed recently that there have been a few permethrin-based products appearing on the market here, aimed at poultry housing (just nothing to use on the chickens themselves). There were already some available for professional use but not for backyard chicken owners.

I only learned about permethrin by obsessively reading this forum!
