mites on a sitting hen

I had some mites hatch and invade a nest with a setting hen once and I used a product called Scalex, it is a natural product with Pymethrum and is found at Pet Smart and such for caged birds. It worked really well. I Sprayed the hen cleaned the nest and sprayed the box. I put down new bedding and sprinkled DE in it and the area around the nest. These were a black Mite and not the tiny Northern Fowl Mites. Scalex worked great. The ones that hatched we could see moving around the nest. I would be very careful putting anything directly on the vent. You can put a pinch of 5% sevin on the side or on top and below the vent but all products I have seen caution you not to apply directly to the vent.

I agree that you should be concerned for your bird. I lost a rooster a few weeks ago due to anemia from having mites. It is not something you want to let go. Good Luck

OMG! Get this! First I went to the custom milling website and found that a 25lb bag of food grade DE cost $13.95. OK, no big deal I thought. So I called them up and asked about the cost of shipping to my zip in So Oregon. They told me $28. That's 200% the cost of the product I'm buying! OK...OK...wait, excuse me for a second. I have to go vomit. I'll be back in a jiffy.

(gagging here, burping too)

Are they freakin' serious?????

Isn't there something else my chicks can dust themselves in? Someone mentioned wood ashes, but then when I think of them looking like Dick Van Dyke after he's been chimchiminy charooing, I don't have the stomach to try that route.

Ideas?

Ivermectin works great as a broad-spectrum anti-parasite medication for mites, lice as well as several types of worms. I use 3cc in my 2-5lb chickens, 2 times per year.

What did you end up using with your hen and eggs? Did it affect the hatch or health of the chicks?

Thanks.

DE is the best! So safe and works great!

Edited to add, like Mcgoo said, if you are looking for DE, just call around to your local feed and seeds and see if they have it. I was surprised to see that all three of the feed and seeds I buy from carry it, and the prices are very good ($10.00 for a 25 lb bag). Sometimes your feed and seed will order it for you, if you ask them.
