Mites or Lice? How do I get rid of them?

I an aracana hen that I think has lice. We tried giving her Diatomacious (spelling?) Earth to take dust baths in, but there are still bugs. The bugs look rather flat and are tan. She doesn't have them very badly, but I want to get rid of them ASAP. Any suggestions?

Diatomaceous earth (DE) does help some with pest control, but it's effectiveness is limited. If you want to get rid of stubborn bugs it's better to use a good quality poultry dust, like Permethrin or Sevin dust. After dusting her make sure you also clean out the coop, destroy the bedding and treat the coop, perches, nest boxes etc with dust or spray as well. And any other chickens you have. Chances are if one of them has bugs, they all do.
