When my son was little he got chiggers. We painted on the nail varnish and had him watch thru a powerful magnifier and he saw a little red dot come from under his skin up to the nail polish, so that's why I assumed they burrow. Could have been blood? Who knows. Anyway, we're in the country and rake up leaves/dry grass into a smallish area and burn, then move the fire to another area--small enough to keep under control. We could burn the entire yard if we had to, but so far it's only been a smaller area. Burning gets chiggers gone.
