Hey everyone! I have had such success with previous questions I thought I would ask again! I have a young frizzle rooster that has scaly mite on his legs. I am applying vaseline on his legs daily. His scales have started to come off though - is this normal? Will they grow back? Also, he has some black spots on his comb. Are these eggs or actual mites? How would the experts suggest I treat this? He is in a separate (smaller) cage on his own at the moment so that I can catch and treat him easier. Thank you to everyone, this is an incredible forum.

You'll want to clean his legs first with dawn dish soap and warm water, Then gently rub the vasaline or vegetable oil on them. Are you treating the areas where he was for the mites? Try to gently wash the scabs with the soap and water too.

:welcome I have no experience with Scaly Leg Mites but found this in my notes ... Soak in warm water & mild dish soap. With toothbrush scrub with vinegar, garlic or Neem Oil. Smear leg with Coconut Oil. Clean out coop; remove shavings; spray Orange Insect Spray or DE, spread lavender, lemon grass, thyme, wormwood in shavings.

The black spots are from mosquito bites = Fowl Pox They'll heal themselves but look around yours area for mosquitos breeding. Where are you located, being Winter I wouldn't think there'd be any mosquitos.

You may want to get some diatomaceous earth (DE) to put all in his feathers, it will keep the mites from moving up in them. You can the food grade
diatomaceous earth it won't bother him if he eats it.
Hope that helps. Good luck.
