OK, I have read a lot of threads on mites and how to treat the chickens and their living area.
Honestly, I don’t know if I have mites or not…my hens are 9mo old, I have 2 each: Buff Orpington, Barred Rock, and Gold Laced Wyandotte. Only ONE hen is losing feathers, one of the Buffs. It was mostly seen at her tail or just before the tail feathers and the small downy like feathers. She has now this week, started losing them on the back of her neck.
The rest of the girls show ZERO signs of feather loss. No, I haven’t checked her yet, plan on tonight when they go to roost. I have put plenty of DE (food grade) in their coop (floor, nesting boxes, sprinkled on roosts) and in the run - not as much there though.
I have also taken the ash from my wood stove and emptied that into the main areas where they dust bathe.
I have ordered Elector PSP and it should be here first of the week.
IF it is mites, I’ll treat all and the coop/run. The coop has sand in it and I guess I’d just spray that down really well. The 30’x6’ run has leaves in it - I live in the mountains of Northwest NC, so I have lots of leaves each fall…decided to had to the run so they’d have something to scratch around in when they weren’t free ranging.
If it’s not mites, any suggestions based on the above? I know pictures will help but it will be this weekend (or maybe tomorrow) before I have help to get them.
Thanks
