Mites

More natural than what?

Research diatomaceous earth -- it's about as natural as it gets. It's ground up, fossilized diatoms.

If you can keep a really clean coop it might help, but who has the time? Mites crawl off of the chicken and hide on the roosts/etc during the day, as I understand it.

I polyurethaned the roosts and the floor of the coop so that I could wipe them off with detergent every day. That seems to keep them away, but who knows how long it will work.

If your chickens are already infested I would go with an insecticide, then clean the coop and use diatomaceous earth as a preventative. It does not remove mites in most cases.

I ordered "Red Lake Earth" from Meyers Hatchery. It is suppose to take care of Mites, lice and worms. You just put it in a containter that you can poke some holes in and sprinkle it in your coop, roost and run once a week. You dont have to worry about eating the eggs either. It wasnt that expensive. A thought just occured to me, I think i will buy one of those glass jars with the silver lid for putting parmesan cheese in and use that for sprinkling.

Thank you everyone. I guess I should have specified that they are chicks that are 4 weeks old and still in the house. I will head out and get the DE. Thanks.
