Mites

I would dust them really well with food grade DE. Have you actually seen the mites??? You'll need to clean their bedding and should put down a good dusting of DE in their new bedding too. I would think you'll need to dust your chickens more than just one day...maybe every couple of days for a few times. Make sure the dust gets all the way down to their skin, not just on the surface. Good luck, and sorry you lost some birds

Teach1; I just purchased DE, no problem with mites just trying to make sure it doesn't happen in the future. I sprinkled some in the coop and run do I also need to put it on the chickens? Also I wasn't sure how much I was supposed to use, is it possible to use too much?

p.s. Thank you for being a spay/neuter advocate. If everyone felt the same way it would eliminate the euthanizing of millions of homeless animals every year.
