BIG Question... MITES where do they come from and what to do to get rid of them. My chicks are only going on 6 weeks old (which I guess makes them pullets now?), I have been putting them outside for a few hours of sun since they were about 3 weeks and the weather warmed up here in Upstate NY for a beautiful spring. As they've gotten older and the weather even warmer, I have been leaving them out in their enclosed and covered run all day and only bringing them back into the house to their brooder at night in case the temperature drops below 50 degrees. This morning I took them outside and after putting them in their coop/run area I found a little red mite on me and then looking into their brooder I saw one other. I tried to check the girls but they are just too squirmy and don't really want to be held. I don't see anything walking on them but I'm sure they would probably be in places I couldn't see. I am assuming they just pick them up from being outside in the dirt?? I heard about Food grade DE. Is this what everyone else would use to rid their flock of pesky mites? If so how exactly do I use it? I am looking for an all natural solution. I thought if you keep your flock clean they wouldn't get mites, is it a definite thing?? I am freaking out here and need some help/advice!! I do believe I will be leaving them in their henhouse from now on. I can not think of bringing them back into my house with any sort of mites on them. Being 6 weeks this Sunday they should be alright outside as long as the temp doesn't drop below 50 degrees right?? I haven't been putting their heat lamp on anymore at night in the brooder in the house. They are all feathered out too. Any knowledge on this subejct and all suggestions are greatly appreciated! Thank you Jrhy
