Hey Everyone;
This is NIcciChick in Southern Calif. My poor hens are totally over-run with bird mites! Yuck. We have had them come into the house on our cats as well and my Mom looks like she's been eaten alive. She's covered with horrid red, itchy bites and feels crawly all day and night. So far we have ozonated the house 6 hours each day, cleaned every day, laundered everything everyday on sanitary with tea tree oil, treated bites with neem oil for healing. AS far as the coop goes we took it all apart and threw away all bedding and the top layer of dirt and bedding in the lower part of the coop as well. Washed everything with dawn soap and scrub brushes, sprayed everything with a natural pet spray that is supposed to kill mites, dusted everything with foodgrade DE, and even crumbled up cigars and put that in the nesting boxes because we heard that helps repel the mites. We covered the floor of the coop, bedding area, and outside run with so much DE it looks like it has snowed! We washed the chickens and dusted them with DE as well. Mom is still getting bit!! What else can we do? I heard wood ash is good but don't know where to get any since we don't have a fireplace ourselves. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
