I cannot wait to see how this baby turns out! It was hatched out of a blue-green egg today! The only roosters there are Rhode Island Reds! If this one is a female she will be coming home to us! This Maran mommy has taken great care of all different eggs! Other hen breeds include Brahma, RIR, Orpington, and Black Star!

Everything is going great with the babies. There were only two! really hoping they are both hens! human mommy let them out on the grass yesterday and they loved it! I will try to post picture of the other baby. Not sure what it's breed is. RIR and possible cuckoo maran mix. I have trouble loading photos sometimes. Debating whether to take 2 one yr old hens the same time we get these babies and keep them separated for awhile!

Ok here is the other baby, hatched out of a brown egg. it's legs are yellow and black! any ideas? def RIR daddy!

Ok im new to having chickens so this may seem like a crazy question. I just hatched off four chicks from a ameraucana rooster and a black sexlink hen. What kind of chickens will they be? Will they lay brown or green eggs? Thanks for any info.

I am no expert either. That will be a good mix though. Not sure if the green egg laying is dominant. Not 100% sure, but I thought I read somewhere that it would be most likely to lay a light brown egg when a green egg layer is a mix breed, was hoping my mix chick would lay the greenish eggs too!

The black one on the right looks like a Marans chick, but I have no idea about the other one. With the Easter Egger mixes, you never know what you will get. You will have to be patient and see. (I KNOW that is horrid hard). I just hatched five little chicks, and I am trying to be relaxed about "what sexes are they?" And "what adult feathering will they have?" But I am not doing a very good job of being laid back.

Yes, I am being impatient as well!! But I do believe after doing some reading on here, that when a maran is mixed with RIR it is similar to a black sex link, in that if it were a rooster, it would have white on the top back of head! and that baby doesn't, so of course, my hopes are up and fingers are crossed! Daughter named that one Phoebe! and the Easter Egger will be Custard, fingers crossed on it being a hen as well! Can't wait to see what they have hatch out of their incubator in couple weeks! Then I will be impatient about getting eggs! haha!

Yep! My chicks are not quite a week old.....and I am already at the edge of my seat!

I hatched 4 pure bred Black Copper Marans and one Olive Egger which is a Black Copper Marans crossed with a perfect Ameraucana (not a regular Eqster Egger).

So yep, I not only REALLY just NEED to know for sure which are male and female (but I have guessed from the combs), but I want to know if the pure bred are show quality, and I REALLY want to know how dark the eggs will be. My favorite egg was pretty dark, with much darker freckles, an absolutely gorgeous egg, so that chick is named "my precious". And I REALLY want her to be a girl, and to lay the same kind of eggs!

You do realize, that we will probably have to await six months to know. Right?
