mix flock of layers & growers - how to feed shell grit?

Hi,

We have a mixed flock of all ages, which consist of baby chicks, growing chicks and some laying Hen. I was wondering, can I put out a self-feeder containing only shells grit for the laying hen? or will the growers get to them? What is the best way to give my hen the calcium they need without having the separate our flock?

If there's a way you can raise the self-feeder up high enough for the hens to get to it, but so that the younger ones can't reach it, you should be fine.

Yeah I thought about that one too but what about the growering chickens? they will still be able to reach the feeder. Will calcium damage growing chickens internal development if they were age 2 months+ or are they smart enough to eat it if they "need" it at this age?
