So a few weeks ago we were visiting the local feed store with the kids. This, of course, means the walk around to see all the poultry and animals. My 7 year old son, who is learning a lot with me about the poultry and loves it all, was excited that there were eggs in nest boxes. When he told the owner he saw an egg, she told him he could go and get it and keep it. He was thrilled down to his toes. I told my son we could try but I wasn't going to jeopardize my turkey eggs I paid for and had shipped. We threw it in with the turkey eggs and despite improper humidity and turning til the last day, we have a new baby chick. They have hatchery birds mostly and I'm not familiar with all the breeds. I suspected I may get a silkie cross as there were at least 3 silkie roos in there, I have no idea what the hens were or how many were sold by the time I thought to look in there a week ago. I'm curious as to what you think the mix may be.

From doing some research last night I gather s/he is in fact a silkie mix having 5 toes and feathered feet. No idea what the other half is. It has a chipmunk pattern, single comb, and seems very reddish overall in color. It's pretty cute. It's very small compared to my Orpington babies but it's possibly from a pullet egg. She's strong and healthy and my son named her RC after the female transformer. Not a big deal what it is (so long as it's not a boy

Right now it is too early to wager a guess, it's obviously part Silkie, but I wouldn't dare guess what else there might be in there until some feathering comes in. With the redness of the down, it's possible one of the red breeds or mixes [RIR/Production red/NHR] could be involved, but the chipmunk pattern is common in many breeds[might even be from the silkie side, partridge silkie chicks have coloring like that], and the beard and slate legs are most likely from the silkie parent, too. Bearded silkies are common and they have black legs.

Thanks for the input!! I had read somewhere that first generation mix silkies do not have the silkied feathering; is this correct? This little one seems ridiculously soft and fluffy on the wings compared to my Orp babies.

This is correct, silkied feathering is recessive[two genes needed to show it] so both parents need at least one copy of the gene to have some of their babies show it. If the feathers do turn out to be silkied, then you might just have a pure silkie with mixed colors, or a gen 2 hybrid.
