Hello guys. I was supposed to start my aviary earlier in the spring but finances were short so I'm starting this weekend. The area that i have set aside is 12'X20'. My question is can I have my waterfowl(mandarins, woodies, and eventually mergansers) in with a pair of amherst pheasants and maybe some California Quail? Would everyone play nice together? Thanx a bunch,

-Tony

Mandarins, Wood Ducks, Hooded Mergansers, Lady Amherst and California Quail all in a 12 x 20' seems a bit much if you are going to provide the water that these birds need to thrive, especially the Hooded Mergansers which is a diving duck. You really wouldnt have enough land room for the pheasants and quail so a second pen would be in order. If you are using the plastic swimming pools for your ducks then dont buy the Hooded mergansers, stick with Ringed teal or another perching, non-diving duck.

In a pen that size the male pheansants will pick the quail off one by one.
A good rule, you need at leat a 10x10 are per pair of birds.

I agree with Mark.. all divers need alot of water.. our pen is 125x75 and almost half water 3 ft deep.
