OK, I had a Black Copper Marans go broody so I let her keep a few eggs. Honestly, I didn't think she was that dedicated (I had another hen go broody last year, kept track of everything and nothing hatched) so I didn't keep track of the days and I didn't candle them. Three weeks ago I got a surprise! She hatched one. I know I let her have a few Marans eggs, a Cream Leg Bar, Rhode Island Red, Black Australorp, and Golden Laced Wyandotte. I have Isbar hens, but I don't remember giving her any of those eggs. The roosters I have are: Golden Laced Wyandotte, Black Copper Marans, and a Cream Leg Bar. When the chick hatched it looked like a female Cream Leg Bar except for the red coloring, however the feathers coming in look like a Rhode Island Red. I don't think my Marans are in the mix and I doubt that the Black Australorp has any DNA in there, but what is? I am thinking my Cream Leg Bar rooster and Rhode Island Red hen. If so, does that mean my chick is male?
