hmm I bet the rats don't think it is very quick..

The OP feels bad about drowning them, there ARE lots of other ways besides drowning to get rid of them.

If my cats weren't so lazy I'd kick their butts out to do some rodent hunting. They just sit at the door and cry to be let in and are afraid of the chickens.

Feelings and facts are two different things. Drowning is actually a very peaceful and quick way to die for small animals like this. Two breathes in and it is basically over.

While I do not care if she chooses to drown or not, drying them out slowly from the inside out is certainly NOT more humane.

Sometimes you have to do what you have to do. I let them drown themselves.

You could always do what my step father did some 20 years ago. The pony had gotten into the grain and I was unaware of it. Well I heard a scratching sound and looked in the 50 gallon can only to see tons of rats. I told my step father and he went down with a can of either (sp?) sprayed it in the can and put the cover on it. Waited a 30 seconds, took the cover off. The rats were not dead, but unconsious. He pulled them out one by one with these big plier type things and snapped their necks. When he was done there were 37 dead rats. The rats had come in once my brother in law had brought some pigs over.

E.T.A. Found the thread!! (MissPrissy explains how it works too) https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=183374

If we want to talk about a slow painful death...so basically this hardens in their tummies and intestines and takes awhile to kill them while they are in pain from not being able to pass it.. Sorry folks..drowning happens very quickly...and yes, rat traps work fast too but when you have many to kill..they kind of learn to avoid the traps..

This is from the thread talking about how it works..THIS is a very slow and painful death.

"The plaster of paris pulls the moisture ffom their body when it is consumed. It makes rat rocks. They can't pass it and die from dehydration, lack of being able to poo and eat, etc. Also the plaster of paris heats up fairly hot.

My aren't you a bundle of smiles. I was offering a way to poison the rats without worrying about secondary poisoning

In the future please read this sections rules.
Although some ways are not considered ideal to some, it serves the purpose of removing the offending predator. If you have an idea or a helpful comment, please do reply. If it is a sarcastic comment about the disposal or capture of a predator, please keep your thoughts to yourself. We are not here to judge one another on methods or ways and means.

I understand you don't agree with the plaster ball method, but instead of flaming/trolling, perhaps you could offer an alternative...
