What is your personal favorite? Mixed breeds or a pure breed (what breed)?
Personally I love and admire pure breeds, but due to only having one coop I keep mixed breeds so I can have more diversity:D

well,, that's a deep one.

1. Ameracuana (Muffed/beards Blue egg layers)

2. Cochin ( Fluffy/Round/ feather shanks and docile)

3. Ayam Cemani ( Sleek/Black Beautiful)

4. Blue Laced Barnevelders..Beautiful Birds.

5. Anything fun and suits the climate and purpose of their owner.

6. Someday, I would love to see Just one Frizzle/Dutch Flower hen cross. I might just lose it! :wee

Hmmm...I think both have their perks! Not sure I could decide which is "better". The purebreds have their obvious pros...you "know" what you're getting and what kind of expectations to have with them. Mixed breeds have their pros too...hybrid vigor, especially noticed in the first generation crosses and the surprise factor when it comes to physical appearance can be fun too!
I'm getting excited about my current flock! So far this is how I'd rank them:
1 - Pearl White Leghorns
2 - Turkens/Naked Necks (one of my Turkens/Naked Necks in particular has been right their with the Leghorns)
3 - Black Australorps
4 - Americaunas/Easter Eggers (not 100% if they are EEs or if some are actually Americaunas)
All seem to be doing well in the varying weather conditions of central WY, which is a huge plus! I am really looking forward to crossing my Leghorns and Turkens :D I think that will be my project cross! If that cross ends up as I hope it will I have a feeling it may take over the #1 position!
Well that was kind of a long answer...I tend to "talk" a lot! lol

I like to buy a few purebred pullets each year but since I have at least 6 roosters of different breeds My flock ends up with a lot of both. Seems like the mixed breeds are a little hardier than purebred. But I love 'em all! ;)

Me too! I find purebreeds are tricky because I LOVE LOVE LOVE that diversity, so I end up with 5 different pure breeds, but I don't have 5 different pens!
