I know I am thinking far out, but I am planning to get Chickens next spring. I was looking at getting 4 girls. I plan to use there eggs for eating, but my family and I do not consume very many eggs. I assume I could give them to my Grandparents, Aunts, Cousins, so egg productivity is not a very big deal. I saw 4 breeds that I would love to get, but I only wanted to get 4 girls and I could not choose on one breed so I thought about getting all 4 breeds, just having one bird per breed. I was planning on getting a Araucana, Silver Laced Wyandotte, Black Sex Link and Black Jersey Giant. Is there anything wrong with mixing so many breeds? And I am under the impression all these birds are friendly? I also slightly would like to get a rooster as well, Making that 5 birds, I would most likely get a Aruacana if I were to get a male, assuming it would be the most showy. Is that just asking for trouble getting a rooster?

Roos do tend to get very protective of their girls. If you have young kids I dont suggest a roo. I have had no luck keeping a nice standard size roo other than a cochin I had!!! Last large Roo I had opened my leg in two places. He wasnt around long after that!!!!The only reason to keep a roo is to have baby chicks. If you want a roo try a cochin would be my suggestion. There is no problem mixing breeds for the females. With that said though they all have their own personalities and some do not get along but has nothing to do with the breed.
