Mixing different species of quail?

Yesterday I came across a deal I couldn't really pass up. 8 quail (mixed apparently 4 hens and 4 Roos which I know is a big no no) the cage, feeders, and feed for $20.

Most of them have balding spots which I know is due to too many Roosns, but my question is can you mix multiple species? I can't tell of they're full coturnix or mixed. And there are 4 a&m Texas quail. They've been in the same enclosure and I'm not sure if the pecking is due to just the male/female ration or the two species being together.

I'll post pictures tonight and try to sex them (at which I am no expert at). Previous owner had them on chicken started but I'll be stopping by the feed store to pick up some startena.

Hi there and welcome to BYC!

You can mix different types of Coturnix quail, but you shouldn't mix Coturnix with say Bobwhites or Gambels.

Make sure to keep the ratio correct with Coturnix, 1 male to 4 to 7 females. Any less females and the male can mate them to death.

So I should be okay keeping them housed together, but definitely need to downgrade on the male quantity.

Yes, males fight. So especially during breeding season, spring thru fall, don't keep males and their harems together. You may have too much blood on your hands, literally.

I didn't take pictures of the a&m quail.

You have all Japanese quail(coturnix) A&M's are japanese quail bred for meat and egg production. They are of the same specie. When trying to figure out housing just think of them as all the same, unless you are particular abt separating colors out

Can you tell by their coloring what sex they are by these pictures? I think I have 4 males and 1 female, but I'm not sure honestly
