Mixing Leghorns

I’ve only got Leghorns in my flock right now and want to put a new breed in there. Do they get along with certain breeds better than others or should I just decide what temperament and characteristics I want the new breed to be?

My leghorns got along fine with my light brahma hens. I should point out that the brahmas came first and the leghorns the next year. Good luck.

I've noticed that mature Leghorns tend to be the first to bully more vulnerable chickens (peeps, pekins, etc.) but are easily dominated by a larger, bolder chicken due to their flightiness. With that in mind, I would refrain from getting temperamental bullying breeds, such as the ISA brown, and avoid too-gentle breeds like silkies or cochins, and otherwise just select based on what you want.

Leghorn and ISA lovers, feel free to disagree. This is personal observation based off of leghorns from Ideal poultry and ISAs from the local auction.

Barred Rocks tend to be bullies from what I’ve read. To the original poster maybe add some Easter Eggers for a colorful flock and a colorful egg basket. Ideally for your situation maybe add the new chickens to the flock when they’re 2.5-3 months old.

The entire flock I have now came from "mixing" Leghorns and assorted other breeds Seems they all got along just fine. I'd just get whatever YOU like and not borrow trouble. They'll get along or they won't, just like any individuals.

My Leghorns did the mixing themselves - older Leghorns, ime, will brood out a surprisingly large batch of chicks! And on a very regular basis. I had a lot more trouble getting them out of the rafters than I did integrating them into the flock
