mixing "show" birds and laying hens

Is it ok to house fancy chickens and regular layers together? Do fancy birds need anything special? I don't know which kinds I want but looking at pictures there are some very nice looking birds out there. Would I want my rooster to be able to mate with her? Sometimes the run gets muddy and it seems that I wouldn't want the fancy feathered hens to get al dirty. Anyone have t his going on?

I don't really have layers or show birds, they are kind of a mix of both, but you should be fine. Depending in the breed, you may want to be more cautious though. Long tail or feet feathers, chest feathers, etc. may get damaged by any type of chicken. You just have to watch, and keep maintnace with your birds. If your run gets muddy, any of your birds can get dirty, not just the fancy ones. Just make sure you are willing to clean them. What fancy breeds are they?
