In a flock of mixed standard and bantam hens, including silkies, would a standard or bantam rooster be better? There are 3 bantams and 6 standards and no roo so far. Thanks.

well seeins how one roo is bigger than the other the only thing I could see that would present a problem is size. If you have 6 standards, they may pick on a bantam roo. If it were me, I would go for the bigger flock so I could have both roo's

I'd be more inclined to go with a bantam roo. A large rooster will probably be rough for the bantam hens.

I have a bantam barred rock roo, with 3 standard-size Red Stars and 4 bantam buff brahmas. The rooster is generally in charge, or at least doesn't get picked on. And he's able to um, perform, with all of them. They all grew up together though, so they don't seem all that aware of their differing sizes. Sometimes the Reds are all "Mom- that little buffy is being mean to me!"

Thanks. So you don't think there will be a problem with a bantam roo favoring the bantam hens too much, just because they are a more accessible size?

I think it's probably all about the individual birds' personalities. The Reds are my roo's favorites. They have been every since they were a week old and we thought he was a she. He always preferred to hang out with them. He's smaller than they are, but not by a lot, so I don't think the difference causes any difficulties.

In the case of introducing a rooster to an already established flock, it will probably all depend on how the pecking order works out and how accepting the hens are.
