MM Freebie..BR or Dom??

The main reasone I was thinking Dominique, is because she was my "free rare chick" from MM. They list the Dom as "rare" but not the BR.

Hmmmm, now I am really confused....doesnt really matter I guess....I just love her!

I'm going with dominique cause my chicks are dominiques, so... thats my guess.
Barred rocks are on the recovering list and dominiques are on the watch list..

Ive seen people list barred rocks as Rare in my travels around the internet trying to discover the truth about the difference between rocks and dominiques.
Of coarse i'm still a noob when it comes to chickens, 2 weeks into the hobby, but from what ive read they are virtually the same bird except for the comb and maybe a little weight.

Stop me if youv'e heard this one before

I don't think you can tell from the photo.

Take a reallly close look at her comb, if it's flat with a point on the end she's a Dom, if it's bumpy all the way up- like the teeth on a comb, she a Rock.

Edited to add for blue fire: Both male and female barred chicks have a white spot on the back of their heads, male chicks tend to have a larger more irregular white spot that may even end in a collar around the neck. Females tend to have a smaller more distinct spot and are usually darker in color. But this is not a 100% accurate way of sexing barred chicks, there are many exceptions.

Kinda went through your posts looking for an update but didnt see one.
Did you ever figure out for sure that its a dominique.
Ive been looking at , and compareing combs, and watching my dom's progress too; and I swear thats a dominique, based on your pic.

Either way, I am curious

I still am not sure...DH has a friend, that raises Doms...I am going to try to get him over here, and see what he thinks...or I might have to take her to his work...this should be a fun ride! I will see what I can find out from him.

She looks exactly like my Black Sex-links, and since Barred Rocks are crossed to produce them, I vote Barred Rock.

I guess Dom. Just went through this myself.

I would think that if it looks like a rose comb, it's a dom....but, if it's a single comb...it's a cuckoo maran, not a BR.
I just don't think MM would put in a BR as the free rare chick either.

But then again, if it's a roo it could be a black sex link.

I vote Dominique, BR's are not on the rare list for Murray.

Accidental....my little one does not have the comb like yours....Donna doesnt even have a comb....just a light pinkish line. And her tail is V shaped. Like a Tree Swallow! Wierd, I know...but I love her!
