I just finished eating one of my white silkie roos since I was tired of seeing him get his butt kicked every day by his brother. He was 1-1/2 years old so it was tough but very tasty. I knew their skin was black but didn't realize that their bones were black too. :)

yes they supposedly are very popular with chinese.

Can you describe the taste just a little more as I'm interested. So far I've tasted home raised cornish cross, maran, barnvelder (my favorite), barred rock, americauna.

I've found each one tasted different and like I said I've heard the chinese really like the silkies but I think it is something with the black.

To me it tasted like most other free range chicken. It had more of a deep chicken flavor but I think that had more to do with it being an older bird rather than its breed. The only one on your list I've tasted was barred rock, which happened to be around the same age as my silkie. It tasted exactly like that.

Black bones?! That's wild! Thanks for the info - one of those trivia items one might need at some point....!

I was surprised too. It actually wierded me out at first. I saw black bones and immediately went to google to see if it was normal, lol.

I had a gentleman ask me if I would raise these for his Asian market. I guess he buys up chickens and sells them to those who are looking for fresh meat but no one in the area raises silkies. It's very interesting.

I wonder, if I crossed my remaining silkie roo with one of my larger hens (RIR, white rock, etc), would the offspring be larger bodied with black skin? That would be pretty cool. I suppose I'll go searching now.

edit: Found it. I'm going to put my silkie roo in with my RIR hens and see what I come up with.
