So I have been having problems with disappearing chickens in the night. Always between certain times. In this case it was between 3am and 5am. My chicks and chickens completely disappeared, one at a time every night. No feathers, no blood, nothing but startled chicken noises in the dark. The only predators capable of getting in were climbers or aerial. My quail pen had previously been torn open in a corner. A higher gauge wire ended that problem. I began going out late at night to catch the unknown predator at which time I was able to identify it as opossum. The MO slightly changed. I now found chickens with the heads and necks eaten as they would start at the head and work down until they were caught or drawn off. They got somewhat sloppy and left a few feathers behind but still not many, as they would eat the chicken feathers and all. I tried live traps with sardines. Ultimately the best way to deal with them was catching them in the act and giving them swift justice with a steel bat. I made sure I got a good head shot and left them dead until morning. Oh, and their was more then one. This is the third killed in the past 4 weeks. Now I am loading up fish smelling poison and live traps.

Are they digging under, going, over or ??? I'd hate opossums even if they were better looking - really nasty critters. Out here they try crossing the busiest roads too often - justice is served, but the area sure stinks for awhile. Sometimes the cars get a couple of them at a time. Must be open season

I officially caught number 4 last night. He was caught in the live trap and I used fish Patti' canned cat food as bait. It was cheaper then another can of sardines. Though the smell is equally as horrendous after 2 days in the sun. They were digging in under a area of the house skirting then coming to a corner and chewing or digging through. So I can't use the house as a barrier. Though I am moving to a new home with a cement foundation all the way around at the end of the month. After plugging all the holes I continued to lose chickens. So my only possible predators were night time dwellers since my chicks and chickens roost in crates. Since I plugged all the holes with cement blocks my predator had to be a real good climber. Now I got the 4th possum last night and I know there is at least one more because we woke up AGAIN at 4 am just like the other times and could hear something banging around on top of the ventilation. So I reset the trap after taking this last opussom far farrrrr from home to a nice wooded area since I got caught trying to drown him and kids ask to many questions.

im sorry for your losses--dealt with many myself, raccoon, opossum, fox etc. the only ones we weren't able to get with the 22 at 4 am in the morning was the fox. they are fast.--the neighbors never ask what we are doing at 4 am in the morning shooting--

That's a count of 2 to the steel bat, 1 to a shovel, 2 live trapped and released because the kids found out and *drum roll*.... awaiting the death of and hopefully last opossum under the house to fish flavored poison. We heard it, but haven't seen it so who knows. My birds are happy but my quail still sound the alarm in the night. Which may just be neighbors moving about. Lost two chicks to being an idiot. One got squashed by the the big chicks and another suffocated when he got trapped behind the roost box.

Nah, the bottom is plastic sealed. I moved pretty much everything out and we should be moving in 7 days.

Oh, andddddd opossum number 6!!!!

Live trapped, turkey/giblets cat food. They love it. This one was the smallest yet. I have the trap set but none last night. I think I have pretty much wiped out an entire family of them.
