modding a dog house for ventilation - help?

DIY ridge vent is easy. Make sure you have about a 2 inch gap in the roof deck at the peak for air to escape. I would lay a strip of 1/4 inch hardware cloth down of the gap.

But this is simple to build, just needs to be covered with singles. I would use 3/4 plywood to build it, on a dog box it doesn't need lumber. 3/4 vent gap should be more than enough.

Measure everything out so when you cut the shingles like this.

the finished ridge looks like this with the homemade ridge vent under it no wood should be shown.

oh wow! thank you for the detailed explanation :love

I’ll work on that first then, then decide how I want to get those gables in.

thanks again!

what tools would I need to cut it from the outside? is it possible to just drill holes? I have a lot of patience if need be. lol
What tools do you have?
Do you have a jig saw?
You could drill holes to get a place to start using jigsaw.

and Yep sheltered run. it’s got a tarp over part of top for now, but I’ll be adding more tarps in the side to block off wind for winter
Good!
Was dreading the thought of that thing sitting out on it's own in your climate.

I think you skipped my previous post. If you use a hole saw, which are used to drill large holes for door knobs and such, it would be super easy. You would just have to drill three or more holes on either end up by the gable, and cover with hardware cloth. My biggest hole saw is 3" in diameter, but I think they make them bigger. This is an easy solution I have seen used a lot in small coops.

3in is plenty big! I presume they will fit in a generic power drill?

I do! I’m not very good with it though. I might go with drilling larger holes, if I use a jig saw I swear I’m going to get very OCD over the aesthetics 😩

Yep, they fit in a regular drill. It doesn't take much more skill to do than drilling a regular small hole, you just have to go slower.

I looked under the coop articles and found an example for you, so you can see what I mean. The article says they used a 5" hole saw (wow I didn't know they came that big!).

Here's what hole saw bit looks like:

Oh I’ve seen those before. I’ll go out on Wednesday to grab one. Whoo, finally getting this project off the ground, the dog house has been sitting there for weeks. I’m such a procrastinator, lol.

Thank you for the help!

Does your drill have a 3/8" chuck?

I have whatever was standard that came with the drill...
Actually that reminds me...
my chuck is stuck, I need to fix/ replace it
right now I can fit the standard drill bits in, but it will no longer open any wider
