Its obvious they are out of good stock. So the genetics are there to produce potential show birds. Hatch a lot! Only a very small percentage of yearly offspring will be good candidates to enter in a show. Maybe just a handful out of 100.

Just constantly handle them! I’ve never, and I mean never had a modern that was mean. Sure, sometime a pullet or young cockerel thought they were all that and flared up their neck, but never once have they ever pecked/attacked me (even broody mommas! Even They don’t peck too much) They do think fingers are food sometimes lol. Hand feeding helps a lot too, and calling them (like yelling here chick chick or some variation of this) when you have food so they come when they are called!Thank you so much for your reply! After GrayFarms mentioned dubbing I did some research and it seems he would need to be, I don’t think I could do it so I won’t try to show him. I thought his beak probably won’t fair him well anyway.
I’ll have to hatch some eggs when they lay next year, see what they make.
Do you have any tips on how I can keep my cockerel friendly? These are pet birds so I like to pick them up. He’s good tempered at the moment and he loves his ladies. It’s not like he can do much being less than a foot tall but I don’t want him getting pecky.
Yes!! This is very accurate. I hatched over 50 lemons blues this year (Finally!) and I only have 7 that are possibly shoe quality, although they still have some aging/filling out to doIts obvious they are out of good stock. I’m hoping this works out for one of my birchens! She has slight shafting in her chest, and I’m hoping she molts that out. The only birds I’m selling/cutting out are ones with clear issues with type. I had one that had the longest back I’ve ever seen in my moderns! They can change a lot in the first couple molts too. I've had birds that had great shape and confirmation but pattern was a little off. And a couple molts they looked much better.

Exactly, and most colors have variations anyways, a judge will look at a type of a bird before getting picky with colors.Hope it works out for you. I see so many people focusing on color when its the easiest factor to control. Type is so much more important.
