Dusty had vanished into the forest, wading in the stream for a moment before trailing off, curiosity getting the better of her, at a mysterious noise in the distance.

Peter woke to find Emery gone. Rufus snored delicately beside her, whimpering in his sleep. Peter felt a great sympathy for the foal. Emery, only a yearling at the time, had kidnapped Peter when he was younger than a weanling. After trying in vain to nurse him from her milkless teats, she made him eat solid food and thus became a dictator. She had started a herd of her own, EarthHerd, where she ruled alone. All others were only weaklings under her grasp. The mares were few and docile stallions many. Ruffians Emery had killed or driven out, whichever came first. All the foals were from her. After a few generations the stallions revolted and nearly killed her, but Peter, a weak and gentle stallion, was afraid for his life and had followed her. After they had been traveling for two years, Emery mysteriously gave birth to a foal that could only have been Peter's - that foal was Rufus. Now Rufus and Peter were equals, meek followers of Emery. Although Emery was obviously trying to hide it, Peter knew she was also carrying another foal of his. He was upset about this. Even though Emery had quietly declared Peter her mate, she never let anyone else know the foals were his. Every year, when another of Peter's foals were born, Emery would abuse Peter and discipline him for the birth of it. Peter now had a firm belief - although he would never speak it aloud - that Emery had gone completely out of her mind.
Now, as the abused stallion awoke to find his lifelong tyrant disappeared, he took this annual chance to be free. He knew where she had gone, but if he told a single soul he would be punished severely.
He rose, stretched, being careful not to wake the sleeping Rufus. Then he trotted over and tried to pick a mare to be mates with temporarily, before Emery made him leave her. He watched them and selected Merry with his eyes.

A small cracking noise could be heard faintly in the woods. The girl had returned. She hid very well behind a bush, admiring all the horses. (Nobody sees her though)
