Peter woke from a nightmare. Rufus and he were away from Skyherd, just as they had been for days on end, resting in the hills just out of the territory of the herd. Emery hadn't been back and now Peter guessed she had died in childbirth. Though his inner love longed to see her again, his real heart begged for freedom. He left Rufus where he was and trotted down toward the hill.

He still wanted a mate. He spotted a splotchy mare with a single foal and no stallion and targeted her, walking nonchalantly toward her.
