PLEASE advise me and others about mold .

I was told by chicken raisers that giving bread that is a bit moldy can not hurt chickens ...

I am very leary about that , BUT need your comments ....

What about HAY that develops mold ? I never use hay but I know others do . I always use pine shavings

Don't give them anything you wouldn't eat yourself (excepting worms and bugs of course!). Or sleep in yourself. And then you'll be fine.

Bread mold is toxic to humans (assume it's toxic to birds, too). They may make penicillin out of it, but in its unrefined form it can cause organ failure. DO NOT feed moldy foods or give moldy bedding to your chickens. Just breathing spores might cause problems, even if they don't eat it.

Someone else who knows more about chickens should give input - but it is better to err on the side of caution.

By the way - it seems that someone on that website is taunting someone into eating bread mold. I wouldn't use that site EVER!

I am sure DIDGETS will be on here soon with some techinal info but if you wouldn't want to be in it or eating it, don't give it to your animals.

I have given molded bread to chickens all my life and they have never had a problem . the mold that grows on bread is harmless.
