Well, I've always been hyper paranoid about missing mold in my girls FF. I try to be hyper vigilant but I'm still new to FF.

Turns out when FF goes bad it's VERY obvious. I made up two active jars this last batch thinking I'd feed one and have another ready while I wash and mix the next batch.

Given it was so hot and humid store bought bread was molding after three days and so was dirt in the yard I shouldn't have been surprised to find my FF had turned as well. Just one jar that I neglected to check for two days but it's got a white webbing all over the top and smells like butt. No 'wondering' involved!:sick

Are you sure it's mold? Kahm yeast is pesky and scary-looking (and prolific when it's warm)...and often mistaken for mold. I tossed more than a couple of ferments early on because I thought it was mold. Did you get a pic?

It smells awful and has fruit flies...

Yeah I'm not seeing mold either. The flies are a concern though, don't want to let those suckers start breeding everywhere!

Turned out to just be the one and I got him! They are bad this time of year but usually more in the house when we have fresh... fruit...duh. Clue is right there in their name. I'm tired today :caf:gig

Oh that's good then. I ended up with a mini infestation last year I think, probably from some fruit I bought. They began swarming around my kitchen compost bucket. I had multiple vinegar traps going, sticky traps on the window, and actively squished any tiny flying thing I saw. Took about 2 weeks of relentlessly killing them to finally clear them out. NEVER AGAIN!

Same here! I pretty much don't even bother buying bananas this time of year unless I'm content to freeze them.
