Hi all!! I'm Sheri from Massachusetts. I've been WWOOFing on farms for a year now. I'm currently on a farm in FLORIDA and the farmer insists on using the moldy grass clippings from her yard in her chicken coop. I've always used a quality straw on other farms. Is this hazardous to the chickens?

Howdy Sheri! :frow
I would definitely avoid giving your chickens grass clippings altogether, let alone MOLDY ones. Straw works for many, but unless your run is covered, it can get wet and moldy as well. And what a pain to clean after a rainy season. I use construction grade sand in my run, and wood shavings/pellets in my coops. People have suggested using wood chips as well. It is definitely a personal preference. Best wishes to you from NY!!!!

What is WOOfing?

I do you old spent or waste hay, but we are very arid out here, so even if it has a little mold, it quickly drys out. It is going to depend on the climate.

If she has been doing this before you got there, how do the birds look? If they are active and eating, breathing well, I don't think you have a problem.
