Molting Even though Less than Year Old????

I have a flock of 9 hens . . . 5 who hatched in the Spring of 2013. They are Black Australorps and Buff Orpingtons and they all molted for the first time between November and December. I also have a Salmon Favorelle from 2013 who has also recently molted. This year, I raised an EE, a barred rock, and a SFH chick, hatched in Feb. The SFH has new feathers coming in all over her head and neck and molting! shes not even a year old; Is this normal????

You may have read that chickens don't molt in their first year. This is NOT true! All four of mine molted in their first year. Totally normal. Be sure they have lots of protein. Here is a link on how to deal and help with the molt.

Thanks for your reply and the very informative link. That's a relief that she's okay and not molting for a health reason! It's really getting pretty cold here in MA now to just start a molt. Brrrrr.
