Molting hen help

A little egg, or I've seen people say they offered canned fish or a little cat food. None of my molts were so bad that I felt the need to feed extra protein.

I offer a grower feed when molting kinda like a side dish of egg shell and let them choose.

Raise protein
Make sure she has plenty of water and shade. You don't want a sunburn.

It is not uncommon for heat to prompt an early molt.

Some birds look sorta bald, loosing most of their feathers at once. Others loose a few at a time, and do look better. Feeding a higher protein diet is good and helps them. Flock Raiser is 20% protein, a good choice.

Thank you so much for all the tips! My girl Sydney lost MAJOR feathers for this molt...gave her some tuna...she loved it!! I have a higher protein feed because I have chicks so I made a mash for her :love as a free choice.

Thank you for this! I've been trying to figure out why my hens started molting in June for this year & last, & this helps a lot! Last year we had a sudden heat wave in June & again this year, only this year it hasn't stopped & we're nearing the end of July

Oh my GOODNESS! Yes...her bare patches don't stand out like that because she us so fluffy on the sides...but she looks like a prickly porcupine. She is a Bantam Cochin and also molted off most of her foot and leg feathers so we can actually see her legs and feet ...looks very odd to us! Happy to know she will be fluffing up soon!:celebrate
