Molting? Injuries?

Hello,
This is the first molt my chickens are going through, and some of them seem to be handling it better than the others. Some of the girls have very bare spots on their back that appear to be bleeding, some areas worse than others. See pics. They do seem to be pecking these areas quite a bit. The skin where the feathers used to cover is darkened a bit as well. Only a couple of my girls are having this issue, the others seem fine. Thoughts?

Thanks

Josh

I was also wondering if you have a rooster, that looks a lot like over mating. How many chickens total do you have? Have you looked them over for mites and lice? You can spray some blue kote on those areas to keep anyone from pecking each other and to help the wounds. Any bloody areas can encourage pecking and more injury.

No rooster anymore. I haven’t seen mites or lice at all. Would all of the chickens be having the issue if it was mites/lice? What’s the treatment for that? I’ll look into the blue kote.

Yes it’s likely to impact all of them since they usually roost together. There’s a depluming mite also.
You can use poultry dust or permethrin. Double check that permethrin works on the depluming mites, I imagine it would. Mites are blood suckers which could cause the blood you see. Nutrition can play a part in it. What do you feed them?

They are fed Kalabach 17% All Natural Layer Crumbles supplemented with Fertrell Poultry Nurtibalancer. I did clean out the coop completely, we use the deep bedding method. I cleaned out all the bedding and sprayed everything down with Carefree Enzymes Poultry Protector, the humidity/temp likely wouldn't allow the permethrin to amply before I put them back into the coop. The issue appears to be resolving though, it seems like they were molting and just had some skin irritation. It was only one specific breed of chicken that appeared to be affected as well. I appreciate your input and helping me come to my conclusion!

I’m so happy they’re on the mend!
