molting question

my chickens are 17/18 weeks... how old are they when they start to molt, do they molt before they start to lay eggs? ive noticed a good deal of feathers in the coop and run just wondering whats going on..

From my experience hens start moulting when they are a year old, at least. Some don't moult at all. Are your hens going bald? Or just shedding feathers here and there?

Yes they do have "mini molts" while they are growing up. Adults usually only molt once a year, but growing youngsters are a different matter.
