The smaller birds in my area are just waiting to scoop up the discarded feathers. Funny watching a sparrow try to fly away with a 7 inch feather. Double bird entertainment.

Some of mine molted their summer, last year’s babies didn’t and instead molted this year, I can’t say why really. One of my geese is really noticeably losing feathers! Especially in his wings, it looks like he won't be able to fly any time soon. They're both about 6 months old. So from what I read in this thread, the age doesn't necessarily matter when it happens within the first year, but the weather can affect it? Since it's starting to feel like autumn, it would make sense. It's just scary to see him when he spreads his wings out since he's missing so many! So I just wanted to make sure that's still normal, too, lol.
Thank you! I thought there were a lot more feathers in their pen area lately, and I noticed he seems to refrain from spreading his wings when they'd run around when they get excited (following us or just wandering). And now that I finally saw his wings when he spread them, it's understandable! Probably not as useful right now with so little feathers, haha. Some of mine molted their summer, last year’s babies didn’t and instead molted this year, I can’t say why really.
When geese molt they’ll lose all of their flight feathers, sometimes all at once or within a few days, then they’ll lose others at a more gradual pace, so it’s definitely normal.
