Once possibly twice a year chickens lose feathers. Sometimes in large amounts sometimes small. It's a natural way to replace their feathers.

I agree with the other posts. Molting is loosing feathers and growing new ones. The first real molt may not take place until the birds are around 1-1/2 yrs old. Pullets loose some downy feathers as they are growing.
