I only have 4 hens and they free-range in the backyard all day. I have seen one of the buffs (Lucy) who is fairly aggressive pecking and eating the butt feathers off the other buff (Louise) who is the least aggressive in the flock. Louise does tend to run from her and I see no blood but you can see some balding spots and of course no feathers ever laying around. Today, we discovered a large bald patch on the back of Lucy and appears her feathers are scattered on the ground - mostly in one spot. Is that molting??? No way she was pecked by the others, she is the 2nd in line and aggressive herself and if they pecked her, I'd assume they'd eat the feathers as she is doing to Louise. They are probably not quite a year old yet.
