We had a bad broody- she let the first one hatch fine, killed the second and pecked the 3rd, but I got her out in time. I put he in with the other broody we have who hatched out 1 chick the same day (all 3 are with her) I just checked on the little one and she is up and fluffed except for where she was pecked. The other little ones were picking at her though- so I brought her inside. I would rather the mom take care of her....but not at the expense of her life. Here is what her wound looks like:

Is there anything I can put on it? I have her in a box with a light right now to get some rest, but may put her back in the box with mom tonight and see how she is in the morning. Mom got up and nearly attacked me when I took her....she is still on 2 more eggs though so she went back.

Thanks for any advice
Sarah

That is a nasty wound. I know you can put neosporin on chicken wounds which helps prevent infection. As far as preventing further pecking, there are ointments out there for that but don't know if Mom will except her.

I'm sorry I can't be of more help. Someone out there, please respond!

Blue Kote works well. So does neosporin. I would not put her back in her mother. Is the chick eating and drinking?

Use neosporin and take her away from the mom and chicks. They will pick that wound. Keep her away from flies, too. They will blow the wound. I suspect she could still be fine if you treat that wound.

Poor baby.

Thanks for all the advice. I ended up putting her back in with the (good) mom after a little rest in the house. She was a little wobbly for the first day or so, but is doing great. Her wound is almost healed completely, just a scab. Mom won't let me pick her up, and she wasn't cooperating with the camera so I didn't get a good shot of the bad side...but here she is 5 days old:

Based on her wing feather coming in I think she'll be really pretty (at least I hope she's a she)
