We had a new mother hatch out 8 goslings a couple days ago and yesterday was their first day out off the nest. Unfortunately, it wasn't a great day for it - cold and rainy. The mom wasn't doing a good job looking out for them and they got pretty wet. She eventually took them back to the nest but four were dead this morning.
The interesting part is that, at some point today, the other four ended up with another goose who is an experienced mother (probably their grandmother, although I don't keep close track). I've never seen that happen before, particularly without any disagreement among the geese. They are now sitting under her. She doesn't have a nest, but I think they probably still made the right choice.
