HI there! I grew up and live in Broken Arrow, OK and am doing my year of research before getting chickens and a coop/run next spring. I have 5 kids and so we are looking forward to good healthy eggs. I have found some amazing material on this site and I'm so excited to finally join the group. I have my coop plan picked out (the Daisy coop from cleancoops.com) and I am researching the breeds of chickens. We can't wait to get started on our new adventure!

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

Best of luck to you as you prepare for you future flock! I know you will enjoy their eggs. They are SOOOO good!

Plus chickens have wonderful, friendly personalities that I'm sure you and your kids will love. Our learning center is packed full of helpful info that you should look into https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center

Have you thought about breeds at all yet? I would recommend buff orpingtons, black australorps, cochins, easter eggers and barred rocks. All are friendly and affectionate. They lay lots of eggs and are great to keep.

Feel free to ask any questions and welcome to our flock!

So glad you could join our community!

Mountain Peeps has left you with some great breeds ideas. I keep Black Australorps and Barred Rocks. You will not go wrong with Black Australorps! Great layers and huge lap chickens! They love affection and will beg to sit on your lap. My girls follow me around like drooling puppies looking for goodies or attention. Mountain Peeps keeps Buff Orpingtons. This breed is just as friendly and docile as Australorps. Either of these breeds are a wonderful bird to keep.

Good luck with which ever breed you choose and we do welcome you to our flock!

Thanks so much! Those are what I was thinking about so I'm glad I was on the right track. One of my boys loves the silkies. Any thoughts on those? Temperament? Good in heat and cold as we get both in Oklahoma?

Silkies are wonderful birds! They are affectionate, friendly and make great pets! They are cold and heat hardy and do well in confinement and free ranging. They are poor layers however and tend to go broody.
