I am truly impressed with my broody GLW. She hatched out 3 chicks in the dead of winter here and raised them in the coop. The chicks are now 6 weeks old and momma is still taking care of them but I can tell she's getting a bit tired of the duties.

Three nights ago she started trying to roost at night. However, the little chickies peeped their sad peeps and she flew back down to sleep on the floor with them.

Two nights ago I decided to place the chicks on the roost next to momma when she went to roost. The chicks immediately tried to snuggle up under momma, and she actually allowed it. It couldn't have been comfortable for her but they were still like that in the morning. What a good momma.

She sure is patient! My second broody went to the roost and her chicks stayed in the covered nest box in the coop so she wasn't far away. They complained for a while, then finally got on the roost after about a week, and LEANED against her.

I'm surprised how much I enjoyed having her incubate and brood the chicks over my incubator. The only issue I had with her was her lack of decorum when it came to waterer cleanliness. She drove me straight up a wall with instantaneously throwing shavings into it AND overturning it the second I'd place new water into her broody box. And of course it was so cold in the coop that the water would then freeze into the shavings and create a nasty block of hard to chip away chicken kryptonite.
