Okay, so I am naturally hatching chickens for the first time! I had an egg that was about two days late hatching. Mom had already left the egg because babies were exploring without her. I brought the egg inside and it hatched yesterday afternoon! Very healthy looking chick and a sweetheart. I let her dry then at night I took her to momma and mom accepted her immediately and put her under her wing. I thought that was case closed….
This morning baby was all alone and had some feathers missing from her face. (I had put small chicken wire on the outside of the coop So the babies couldn’t walk right through it so I thought that’s what happened) She was lethargic and shaking so I brought her inside, gave her some nutri-drench, food and water along with a brooder to warm her up. And I put momma and babies in a chicken tractor until I could find where baby lost her face feathers and see if I missed a sharp part.
It’s about 6 PM here and raining therefore dark. Momma brought her babies inside the tractor coop and had them all under her and I thought I’d see if she’d want her baby back….she did not. She started pecking the baby! I saved her thank goodness but now it’s got me thinking that baby was pecked on her face because I couldn’t find a sore just missing feathers and a bit of blood.
Should I try again tonight to give baby back? I’m scared to be honest. Or should I just accept momma is rejecting her?
Or should I keep her a couple of more days until she catches up with the others and then try again?
ANY advice is appreciated!! I just don’t know what to do!!

Hi,

You're sure doing well by this chick!

I think if it were me, I'd wait a couple days so it can get stronger, and faster. We've had the strangest luck with putting baby chicks around a month old, for the third time, into a breeding pen, and having a hen take them as hers, so to me, any age works.

Younger the better for sneaking it in though. I'm always afraid of doing it at night, as they're up before we are, and if the hen rejects one for whatever reason, we're usually not going to know for hours. Maybe try in a few days when she's not looking. Stick it with the others running behind the mom.
