Planted some stuff in the chicken yard. For those of you guys who don't know, I have 10 chickens in a 20X30 run. The run is divided into three equal 10X20 subruns. I plant grass, vegetables, millet, bahia, and clover in two of them. Then I allow them to rotationally graze.

Today I let them into a new section. Planted with turnips, rape, millet and clover. Clover didn't do to much, but the millet, rape and turnips did.

This is the start of the day, 0930. I will allow them to stay until 1400, then move them back to the original subrun.
Then for those who don't know I will take a second picture to show the amount of grazing ten chickens can do in 5 hours.

I "thought" I'd do some weeding whilst the chickens were free ranging for the first time in my back yard. Hah! I never got anything done, just watching them enjoy themselves.

I have weeds and grasses up to *here* and really need to get to doing some yard work. Well, after the second weekend of loose chickens, I've discovered 9 chickens and 2 ducks can trample down tall grasses pretty well. Or, at least make paths so I look at the mess and think, Hey, I can tackle that!

It's not just a huge yard of weeds any more, the chickens sectioned it off for me! Plus, they hardly ate any feed....

And I promise to REALLY do some yardwork next weekend.

I put 20 four week old chicks out in their run on Tuesday. It was an unused (since last summer) extra run which I kept everyone out of. It was full of nice weeds and grass. After a day and a half of 20 energetic chicks running around and eating everything in sight, there is no longer a green thing standing in there. They had a blast!

Hi, many thanks for showing us, I,m not surpaised, we only have 4 chickens and we have them in a 12sq run in 2 weeks every bit of grass was gone, so we made a extra run to go betwen the veg runs (11ft by 2ft long) and it takes them 2 days to mower each run,we have 6 runs).

we have now divided the 12ft run in half and we put sand in one side and grass in the other and they go between the 2 plus the extra grass they get from the veg runs and they dont eat much feed it is there for them if they want. happy chickens we have and they keep giving us big eggs with two yokes. lol!
