Montana

Hi DuginMT,
If both your barred rocks have a large yellow spot on their heads they are males, the females will have a very small spot. Also, on most chicks, the female will get tail feathers faster than males.
Nice start to your coop, but you know your going to out grow it way to fast.

I agree with Azriel. What I have noticed the most is that in chicks the ones that get the wing feathers and tail feathers first are usually females, and the male chicks tend to grow their wing feathers slower and run around without tail feathers for a longer time. I have had a few mistakes this way, but not very many.

Welcome to the forum. Nice coop that is coming along. You will enjoy having chickens.

I just picked up some free chicks with feed purchase at a place that's just starting to carry feed. They sell Hubbard- anyone have experience with that brand? I love the people at this store, and would rather give them my business if the feed is good :)

I will get pics this evening :)

Morning all ! Happy to announce I ordered this coop this morning and will be picking it up next weekend .
http://missoula.craigslist.org/grd/3705478585.html Nice guy, he is making this coop only bigger, taller, wider and longer. Bigger window. 2x4 roosts so they can sit on there feet during the winter
To keep tere feet warmer. I will attach a poop board when we get it.
We want azriels birds to be comfortable and warm in winter . He added a hook for a nice heat lamp to.
We will be heading to victor mt next weekend to pick it up,
Awesome day today, to bad I have some weird stomach thing, ugh need to go back to bed!

Well Karlamaria , starting out I knew I wanted a heritage breed. I'm a history buff and a tree-hugger besides, so biodiversity and locally adapted species are important to me. I wanted a dual-purpose bird that lays well and produces good meat. I love the flavor of pastured eggs, so I knew I needed a chicken that could range, and patterned varieties tend to be somewhat less vulnerable to predation, especially from hawks, which are quite common in my area. Cold-hardiness is of course important to keeping comfortable animals in Montana, and Wyandottes are very well suited with their fluffy “petticoats” and compact combs – the Golden variety was developed in Wisconsin. I chose the Golden variety over the original Silver because I thought they would be better camouflaged against the dun ground around here, and also I thought they were especially pretty. The more I research the GLWs available, however, the more I find they are in need of some good genetic stewardship; there are few good breeders left, and far between (this board being the exception, of course). So, by keeping my own flock of GLW's, I can be part of the same genetic preservation movement that drives my heirloom seed exchanges.

I forgot to add they are reputed to have wonderfully sweet personalities, which is definitely something I'll enjoy if it comes through in the birds I end up with.
