Montana

I may soon have the chance to move back home to Great Falls. I have wanted to move back home for a very long time. I would like to ask anyone in or near Great Falls that may have a line on property that is for sale to keep me in mind. I would like a piece of land big enough to grow a large garden and a place to keep chickens. I know there are a few places in Great Falls where keeping small amounts of live stock is allowed. I don't need a huge house 3 bedrooms 1 bathroom is big enough and I am also happy to look at land where I can bring in a modular or mobile home.. Any info towards my goal is greatly appreciated....I'm so homesick it hurts.

Welcome, Breezy! It'd be nice to have someone else from Great Falls on this site -- I think I am the only one. !

I live on the NW side of town, just 1.5 blocks outside city limits, so my chickens are okay. I believe that even over here, close by but in city limits, the livestock thing is okay. Most houses in my area have huge yards, or small amounts of acreage. I know there is a real cute house right down the road from me that is coming up for auction the beginning of August -- it would be perfect for what you are looking for. Also, another one not too far away that is now for sale with small acreage & a huge barn at the back of the property, brick house. Don't know what they are asking and I don't know what price range you are thinking.

Also, the house right across from me is being rented but the owner is wanting to sell. 3 bdrms, 1 bath, huge huge back yard, all flat, all chain link fenced, and there is more than enough room for chickens and a garden. Last I heard I believe she wanted $145,000 for it. Let me know if that is in your price range, you can PM me and I can give you her name & phone #.

I was away from Montana, living in Virginia for 28 years and it was so good to finally get back home.

I left Montana for 11 years, 86-97, and boy was I glad to get back! The last five years were in Sacramento, CA and for this country boy it was not a good environment. Then, tried Juneau AK from 04-06 and again I was happy to get back. Way too wet up there!

I witnessed my roo King breeding another buff orpington this morning, shortly after I let them out of the coop. This is the first time I have seen him do this but believe from the noises over the past few days that this wasn't his first time. Another good sign for egg-laying I hope! I am wondering, will roosters breed a hen even before she is ready to lay? And, do roosters tend to prefer their own breed or don't they usually care?

Hi Doug! All good signs! I am betting you will start seeing eggs in the next week. No, roos don't care who they breed with -- you will get to the point where you feel sorry for the hens, now that he is getting a taste of what life is all about for a rooster!!

The squatting & allowing a rooster to breed them are all very good indicators of what's to come -- in fact you probably will be seeing the little "first" eggs in the next day or so. A lot of times the pullets are confused as to where they are supposed to be, so you might find them on the floor, in the corner, outside, maybe in a nest if you are lucky!! If you have straw or shavings on your floor you may need to dig thru the straw if you see a spot that looks like it's being used as a resting place.... -- this has been my experience anyway. I have two EE's that just don't want to lay in the nests -- I find their eggs on the floor of the coop just about every day, and sometimes I really do have to move the straw around to find the egg. Yesterday I found one of their eggs outside in the grass. They just started laying a few weeks ago. I have no clue really what to do to break them of the floor thing. More than once I have lost an egg because someone else found the egg before I did and decided to have a snack.--which is not a good thing.

And a hen usually doesn't accept a roo unless she is either laying or at the point of starting to lay. Again, my own experience. Keeping my fingers crossed for you!

I agree with montanachicks, you should be seeing eggs anytime. I've found pullet eggs just about everywhere. I even got a few new ones right under the roosts in the morning. I think the first few times they are taken by surprise and just lay them whereever. Mine like to lay under my nests, so I just put a couple of boxes under there and they lay in the boxes. My broodys like to horde eggs under there too, I took 15 away from my blue Orp today. I'm thinking of putting a fence around the area under the nests, then I'd have a place for the broody to hatch out a clutch.
Hope every one is staying cool

My girls seem to have had a very bad day yesterday because of the heat, and today was hotter. So this morning, I went into town and got three Cobra misters and put them up for the girls. One over the front doors of the coop, one between two of the pens so two sets could get the mist, and another one in the open yard where I let them all loose. They seemed to help some, and they tried to find any open-shaded areas that they could. I hope this heat decreases soon. I am the one that is really wilting with it. Makes me not want to do anything but sit right in front of my high volume fan!
